Salem is a city in the Commonwealth of Virginia and serves at the county seat for Roanoke County. The population, as of 2012 was 25,000 residents.
School children are educated through the City School District. The school system operates and maintains four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. The school system is highly rated by parents and educational professionals and offer a better than average public school education making VA real estate very attractive. Real estate in the city includes single family homes, townhouses and condominiums in middle and upper class neighborhoods, as well as a variety of rentals for those who would rather not own property.
History
The city was first named Totero Town, after the first Indian inhabitants to explore the area. The area became a small settlement that became s topping place for travelers that followed the Great Road, which is now route US-11 and later became Interstate 81. The city received its charter in 1806 and the origin of the current name of the city is unknown. During the American Civil War, the city was attacked twice, but got in the last shot at Appomattox Court House just prior to General Robert E. Lee surrendering. The city has grown into a city with a great interest in athletics. Roanoke College claims the NCAA Division III Football Championship and is also home to the triple A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. The city also hosts several state, regional and national sporting events at its facilities.
Parks and Recreation
The city is home to seven parks, including a dog park, and a community building. The parks feature playgrounds, tot lots, sports fields, picnic areas, fishing and gazebos and shelters that are available for special events. Some of the parks include shelters that are available on a first come first served basis. There are also youth sports teams and a host of summer activities for all ages. The city also maintains a municipal golf course, bike way and senior center.

There is always something to do in the city and for the active person or family on the go and that is a good thing. As Virginia’s Championship City, sports fans will love the sporting events that take place. Fans will find the NCAA Men’s Division III Basketball and the NCAA III Volleyball championship an exciting time to be in the city. There are also museums, performing arts programs, art galleries and plenty of night life in the city.

The city sponsors a variety of events designed for the entire family and include Farmers Markets, concerts, movies and holiday celebrations. Residents and visitors will find something for every member of the family.
